Frequently Asked Questions & Policies

Do you offer a guarantee?

Yes, I do! I offer a risk-free guarantee for the first hour of tutoring. If for any reason you are not satisfied with tutoring or simply think that online tutoring is not a good fit for you, you don’t pay for that first hour.

For more information, please read my policies below.
How long are sessions?

For most students, sessions are either 1 hour, 90 minutes, or 2 hours long. The duration depends on a number of factors, such as the amount of time and ground to cover before the test, attention span, and scheduling logistics. I find that 90 minutes to 2 hours is ideal for going through questions from homework and still having plenty of time to make progress on new material.

I generally don’t do sessions less than an hour except for very special cases. I occasionally do marathon sessions when time is limited and we have a lot of material to get through. Please let me know in advance if you want to do this so I can block out enough time.
How many sessions do I need?
That varies by student and depends on factors like the amount of time before your test, your score goals versus your current practice test scores, and your diligence with studying and review. For most students, meeting once or twice a week for 3-4 months before their scheduled test is ideal. Some students work with me more intensively for shorter amounts of time just on one area of the test. Other students end up needing a longer time frame, especially if work, school, family, or health limit their study time.

This variability is one of the reasons I don’t offer tutoring packages. I can, however, talk with you about your situation and give you my best professional recommendation. I’m also happy to revisit the question periodically so that we can make sure we are on track to meet your goals.
How does online tutoring work?
With most students, I use Zoom for audio/video communication and Bitpaper to work through material. Bitpaper is an online interactive whiteboard that allows us to upload pdfs or other images, write on them together, take notes, and later export the notes to pdf. Students appreciate being able to mark up the material the same way we could do in person and having everything online keeps it more organized!

I also provide study plans for all test prep students, generally through a shared folder in Google Drive.

You can read more details here.
What technology do I need?
Any computer with internet connection will work fine for online tutoring. I have found that the following items, while not 100% necessary, help online tutoring run more smoothly:

– Chrome or Safari (the online whiteboard program requires one of these browsers, although there are workarounds if needed)
– A mouse (far easier for writing than a laptop trackpad!)
– Headphones with a built-in mic (to improve audio quality)
– A webcam (although it’s perfectly fine not to use one to improve internet stability or for privacy reasons)
Do you offer packages or discounts?

I believe that every student is different, so I don’t offer packages because I don’t want students to feel locked into a certain number of sessions with me.

If you are looking for ways to save money, consider finding a friend and organizing group tutoring. That can be a great way to spread the cost.
I also offer a referral bonus. For each student you refer who completes a session with me, I will provide you with a $25 Amazon gift card OR a $25 credit towards tutoring.
When is payment due and how does payment work?
Aside from the first session and special circumstances, payment is due before the session takes place. When we schedule the lesson, you will receive a confirmation email with a secure link to pay for the session. Payments are accepted from all major credit cards.

The first session is an exception because of my satisfaction guarantee. If you aren’t satisfied with the first hour of tutoring, you don’t pay for it.

For more information, please read my policies below.
How does payment work if I decide to extend the lesson?

No problem! I love it when students find they are getting so much out of the session that they want to keep going. Since the originally scheduled portion of the lesson was pre-paid, I’ll send you a separate email after the lesson with a link to pay for the additional time.

What is your cancellation policy?
I understand that life does not always go according to plan. I have a 24 hour cancellation policy. Any lessons can be cancelled or rescheduled more than 24 hours in advance. With less than 24 hour notice, the session fee is forfeited.

Even if it is less than 24 hours before the scheduled start time, please do contact me that you can’t make the session. If my schedule permits, we may be able to just move the session to a slightly different time or date. No-show sessions cannot be rescheduled, however.

True medical emergencies often justify exceptions to this policy.

For more information, please read my policies below.
For group tutoring, do you find my partner or do I?

Currently it is your responsibility to put together groups for small group tutoring. Stay tuned, though, as I am considering opening up small group classes if the demand exists.

Who makes a good partner for group tutoring?
look for someone you feel comfortable working with who also has similar strengths and weaknesses. If you both struggle with logic games, you might be a good fit. If your score breakdowns on practice tests are extremely different, then one-on-one tutoring would probably be more effective.

Take interpersonal dynamics into consideration as well. Make sure you choose someone are comfortable making mistakes in front of, since mistakes are a large part of the learning process.
For group tutoring, do we need separate computers?

That’s nearly always what people do. It’s up to you though. Just be aware that if you are sharing a device, only one of you will be able to write in the interactive whiteboard at a time. Audio may also be better if you are using separate computers and headphones.

These policies are subject to change, but I do my best to keep this page updated. When we’re ready to get started, I’ll send you your own PDF copy of these policies.

Although I never require you to pay more than one session at a time, payment is due in advance of each session. Payments can be made by credit card or Paypal through a secure link in the scheduling confirmation email. EXCEPTION: For the first session, because of my risk-free guarantee, payment is not due until after the first session.

First Hour Risk-Free Guarantee

I guarantee that you will be satisfied with our tutoring sessions. If you are not satisfied or feel the tutoring is not a good fit, you do not need to pay for the first hour of tutoring. If you have pre-paid for this first hour, your payment will be fully refunded.

Rescheduling & Cancellations

Please notify me at least 24 hours before you or your child will not be attending tutoring due to an illness, vacation, extracurricular activity, etc. I recognize that some illnesses can cause sudden cancellations.  If a sudden cancellation is due to a sudden illness such as this or a sudden unforeseeable emergency, the 24-hour cancellation policy may be waived on a case-by-case basis. Aside from these situations, if you cancel with less than 24-hour notice, you agree to pay the full price of the lesson.

Sessions cancelled with more than 24-hour notice can be rescheduled or refunded.

If I have to cancel a lesson due to illness or emergency, I will notify you as soon as possible and arrange for make-up tutoring sessions.

Logging in Late

Please log in on time for tutoring. If you are running late or experiencing technical difficulties, please text or call me to let me know. If you are late, no time will be added to the end of the session. If you are more than 30 minutes late to the lesson, I will consider this a last-minute cancellation.
